The WoW designers wanted their classes to have a quality they call "concentrated cool," and to that end they demanded that every single class have unique abilities, spells and mechanics. As it has often been said that WoW's class differentiation results in the game actually being multiple games in the same package (as any player that has both a Warlock and Warrior can attest), we think it's safe to say that Blizzard has succeeded famously in this endeavor. When Blizzard began development on WoW way back in 2002, it wanted to ensure that each class met certain criteria. Astute fans will notice similarities between the WoW Mage class that we know today and the Archmage and Sorceress classes from Warcraft III and between modern WoW Hunters and the Head Hunters and Rangers of WCIII as well. Beyond the differences, however, Blizzard's developers championed the need for every single class to be capable of soloing (playing all by themselves, without the aid of a party) to maximum level (at the time these rules were created, the level cap was 60, mind you). Taking that concept even further, they decided that every class must be competitive in PvP combat. While they were shooting for a degree of PvP competency out of every class, that doesn't necessarily translate into every class being a murderous PvP rockstar (again, I'm staring right at the Warlocks and their filthy Death Coil spell).
