Death Knights are deeply woven into the fabric of Warcraft lore. The first Death Knights came about because of the machinations of the Orcish warlock Gul'dan who trapped the spirits of slain Shadow Council warlocks in the dead bodies of Stormwind Knights.Unlike traditional tanks, Death Knights will not use shields, instead holding aggro by virtue of their enormous weapons and a collection of magical abilities. These abilities will also introduce the "runic" resource system for special abilities. Wrath of the Lich King was announced at this year's BlizzCon. The next expansion pack for the mega-hit World of Warcraft, the expansion will raise the level cap to 80, introduce a new crafting profession (inscriber) to the game and bring the long sought-after siege weaponry to PvP Battlegrounds. The expansion pack has no official release date.The next generation of Death Knights were rune-wielding fallen Paladins who had pledged their souls to the Lich King. Arthas himself became a Death Knight in Warcraft III while trying to save his people.
