The Chaos Wastes DateTime:5/23/2012 10:37:34 AM
The next stop on our tour was the RvR zone just south of the Inevitable City. The Chaos Wastes are part of the northern region of Kislev but the terrain shows the influence of near total Chaos dominance. Vegetation is oddly mutated, showing off unusual colors and behavior not normally found in plants. As such, many of the keep layouts are based on the most successful DaoC keeps. One element in particular Mythic is keen to see repeated is "roof sieges," where players who manage to kill the keeper must then hold that room against flying enemy players who storm the room from the roof. Holding keeps will also be a big goal of guilds as placing guild banners on keeps will not only give a guild experience and bragging rights but will lend substantial buffs to allied players everywhere in the zone. The area also marked our first sighting of a Chaos keep. Keeps and sieges are one of the most significant features for Warhammer Online's RvR combat system. Essentially lifted directly from the successful system in place in Mythic's own Dark Age of Camelot, each RvR region in the world will have two keeps, one geared toward each opposing race. Holding keeps will be a significant factor in possessing the region and pushing the borders of the war toward the all-important city sieges. In our demonstration, an outer wall had to be stormed and taken down with siege engines that could be generated on special ground pads. While the engines themselves will always be accessible, players can bring crafted add-ons with them that will increase their power. Each will also have a built-in mini-game. Dark Elf rams, for example, will use a golf-style swing-meter and players who use Orc catapults will need to input the proper velocity and angle against prevailing winds to have their rocks land in the proper place.
